SB 36 – Optometry Reintroduces Surgery Legislation in Ohio
After failing to pass an expansive surgery bill last year, Senator Jerry Cirino, with the support of the Ohio Optometric Association, has reintroduced similar language in 2025. SB 36 allows optometrists in Ohio to do a variety of surgical procedures. This bill is dangerous for patients, unnecessary, and the OOS, AAO and OSMA will vigorously oppose it.

OOS Members Recognized at AAO Annual Meeting
This year, at the American Academy of Ophthalmological (AAO) Annual Meeting in Chicago, several members of the Ohio Ophthalmological Society (OOS) were recognized for their work advocating for the profession and patients.

Update on SB 129 – Optometric Surgery Legislation
The Ohio legislature recessed for the summer at the end of June. There was no additional activity on SB 129 after the OOS and OSMA testified in opposition to the bill in front of the Senate Health Committee on June 12. We sent out a member alert after opposition testimony.

OOS Comments Submitted for Proposed LCD — Botulinum Toxin Injections
OOS submitted the following letter of comments on CGS’ draft local coverage determination (LCD) DL 39857 — Botulinum Toxin Injections. "We write to share our concerns that the proposed LCD will restrict patient access to proven, medically necessary care by arbitrarily restricting the dosage amounts, number of injections, and injection sites to be less than the longstanding standard of care for treatment of blepharospasm..."
