OOS Members Recognized at AAO Annual Meeting

This year, at the American Academy of Ophthalmological (AAO) Annual Meeting in Chicago, several members of the Ohio Ophthalmological Society (OOS) were recognized for their work advocating for the profession and patients.

Walker Motely, MD was recognized for his outstanding six years of service as one of two representatives from Ohio to the AAO Council. Joe Coney, MD currently serves as Ohio’s other representative. Dr. Motley will be replaced by OOS Immediate Past-President Carla Ford, MD. The OOS thanks Dr. Motley for his service as a Councilor and Past-President of the OOS.

Current OOS President, Aleksandra Rachitskaya, MD was recognized for completing the competitive year-long AAO Leadership Development Program (LDP). The LDP program brings together ophthalmology leaders from state, subspecialty and international ophthalmology societies. Dr. Rachitskaya was nominated by the OOS to participate along with 20 representatives from these other organizations.

OOS Executive Director Todd Baker was recognized by AAO State Affairs as one of two executive directors of the year for his work leading the Society, its advocacy efforts, and the Play Hard, Don’t Blink program.

Emily Xu, MD, an ophthalmology resident from Ohio State University, was the only resident to present at the AAO Council meeting. Dr. Xu attended the AAO Congressional Advocacy Program in Washington D.C. in April as an Advocacy Ambassador. After returning, she has been very involved in the advocacy progress in Ohio—meeting with public officials at the OOS Legislative Day in May and educating other residents about the advocacy progress. We thank Dr. Xu for her work in 2024 and know she will continue to be a great advocate for the profession in the years ahead!
